Clerk: 22% Voter Turnout In Detroit
11/04/2009 --
Nearly a quarter of Detroit voters cast ballots in the general election.
With 100 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday, 129,701 people had voted. That's nearly 22.7 percent of the city's 572,502 registered voters.
Officials earlier predicted 20 to 25 percent of the city's 572,502 registered voters would cast ballots.
Tuesday's ballot included races for mayor, city council, city clerk, school board and charter commission. Proposals included electing city council by districts and a school bonds initiative.
It was Detroit's fourth election this year. A special election for mayor was held in February, then a runoff for mayor was in May, followed by the August nonpartisan primary. Turnout for all of them has been poor.
